A bug in Instagram automatically deleted the content of many users; Instagram’s head rolls out a public apology

Recently, there was a significant bug reported by several Instagram users, which has led to many users’ deletion of stories. The big created a lot of speculation against the photo-sharing platform. In accordance with the disturbance caused, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has now publicly apologized.

Recent reports state that when the stories were deleted due to the bug, several activists were sharing posts, spreading awareness about Red Dress and the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). These activists had alleged that their posts were intentionally deleted by Instagram officials, giving it the name of a bug. Concerning the deletion of stories, the statement given by Mosseri and Instagram clarified that the activists’ stories were not deleted due to their content.

Adam Mosseri, in his tweet, has answered questions raised by activists and other users. First, he said that the officials want to apologize to all those who felt that they were spreading awareness on a very important issue and could not do so because of the bug. Adam Mosseri further cleared that yesterday, and the officials discovered a technical bug that affected the stories, highlights, and archives of millions of users worldwide. Users of this bug saw that the stories in which their feed posts were re-shared disappeared unknowingly. According to him, many users felt that their stories were removed due to the hashtags used, but that is not the case. In reality, there was a bug that has been removed now.

However, there are a few changes made recently in the photo-sharing platform Instagram. That has been done so that the users are less likely to see feed posts re-shared in users’ stories. A few days back, the company had received feedback from the users that they do not want to see the posts appearing in the feed yet again in the stories. In some markets, the photo-sharing platform has disabled the option to re-share posts in stories, and now users are not getting that option any longer since repeated visuals might make it monotonous and annoying.

In addition to all this, Instagram revealed that because of the particular bug, some activists and a huge number of users from all over the world were affected and deleted their posts. Apart from re-shared Stories, many users did not see their archives or the highlighted stories either. The feed posts that Instagram users share in stories are shown as the label of re-shared. Similarly, the new re-share sticker can also be given in the photo-sharing app, as it is coming into the light, although there has been no official addition of such features yet.
