The new approach towards reducing Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)
The total harmonic distortions or THD commonly produced in the PV systems are very harmful and can cause severe damage to the load and machine besides causing malfunctioning. It can also disrupt the protective relays connected with a system and produce incorrect meter readings. Many ways are presently used for reducing THD and the most commonly used method is to use a harmonic filter.
This problem is very common and serious in the case of solar power generation and can cause serious faults in the solar energy converter and produce voltage fluctuations in the system. The main cause of these problems is the connection of numerous non-linear loads like capacitors or inductors connected to the PV system. Generally, these kinds of distortions are eliminated by network monitoring or applying AI moderators or the commonly used switching in case of power electronics.
However, all the above methods are very time consuming as is evident. So the researchers have come up with a new adaptive filter technique to reduce THD in the PV systems.
Adaptive harmonic filters
Harmonic filters have been used for some time now in the case of solar PV systems. However, some researchers have now come up with the idea of using adaptive filters that can reduce the human effort and monitoring required for reducing the THD in the inverter systems.
This method is easier and very much cost-effective but also cannot be used on a large scale. The more the number of filters we attach to the system the closer the system goes near the resonance region and becomes more susceptible to becoming unstable.
However, the adaptive filters can eliminate this problem to a large extent as the adaptive filters are self-designing electrical devices that keep on continuously changing themselves according to the input data and the parameters of the filter are set in a time-varying mode and they keep on adapting themselves to the conditions accordingly.
Adaptive filters are being highly used for complex grid synchronization
The adaptive filters are time-varying and keep on changing their parameters to suit the need of the system and hence they are the most favorable option for grid synchronization nowadays since a large number of non-linear loads are attached in a single grid. The report on this market by Value Market Research identifies the most popular application of adaptive filters has been in the transmission of renewable energy sources like wind and solar PV systems.
