On the photo-sharing platform of Instagram, the users usually get a ‘bio’ space on their respected profile with a word limit of 150 characters. The option is given to the users so that they can write a brief about themselves, their interests, and similar other details. However, apart from that, the users will now also be able to publicly show their self-acclaimed pronoun, which they use with their name, although it will not be mandatory for all the users to use this space. The benefit of the new feature will be only open to those who will prefer to share their sexual identity on the public podium.
This week, with the help of the new feature in the Instagram app, the users will be able to show up to four pronouns in front of their profile names, which will be seen in fed text. However, Instagram officials have termed the new feature as completely optional; that is, if a user does not want to add a profile pronoun, then the information related to that will continue to look like before. The users will also have the option to remove them from their profile or change them whenever they want. This feature, which is to roll out soon, is done so to reflect gender diversity prevalent in and around the entire globe. That is, the LGBTQ users who are exploring their sexuality and their real identity will reach others on the platform. In a recent conference with the media, the Facebook high command has made it public that they were giving its users the tool to express themselves on Instagram. After sharing the pronouns, the sexuality of the users will be easily accessible to others. However, it will just be optional and not mandatory.
It is to bring light upon that the option to add pronouns in front of the name in the profile is currently being rolled out in selected countries only. To do that, the users have to tap on the ‘Edit Profile’ button by visiting their Instagram profile. Then, in the prominence option seen there, the users will be able to type in the pronoun of their choice, or they can choose from the opportunities that will be seen emerging in the pop-up.
At present, the users are being given around 41 options to add as pronoun bonuses. There is also an option to hide the pro bonus on the platform. That is done so, to keep people away from any kind of online hate or bullying, which can often be associated with their sexuality. For that, the users will be able to hide the reward from the toggles found in the settings for the ones who do not follow them. This option will already be pre-enabled for users under 18 years of age. At the moment, the Instagram pronoun feature is available in English-speaking countries only and will be rolled out soon for the rest in the coming weeks.
