MIUI earthquake alert feature is a big success, detected around 35 earthquakes

Xiaomi rolled out the MIUI 11 custom user interface last year and added a special feature. With the new feature, MIUI powered smartphones and devices could warn users of natural disasters such as earthquakes. Now the company has explained how this feature proves beneficial for the users as so far, and it has detected about three dozen earthquake cases.

According to a report by GizChina, Xiaomi shared on the Chinese social media platform named Weibo about how its ‘Earthquake Detection Feature’ is helping millions of users predict an earthquake. The company stated that the feature had been online for more than 500 days. It has detected more than 35 earthquake cases of magnitude 4.0 or above since its advent. Xiaomi also shared that as a part of MIUI 11, this feature has reached a total figure of 8,604,477 devices. The ‘early warning system that Xiaomi’s Earthquake Detection feature comes with uses the time difference of the earlier incoming waves. In reality, the waves coming from the earth move rapidly, and predicting an earthquake becomes possible as the warning is received a few seconds before the actual hit. The longitudinal waves move faster and transverse waves move slower than these. Therefore, the first longitudinal waves do not cause damage, and they receive an earthquake warning.

Xiaomi has revealed that apart from several smartphones, the particular feature has also been added as a part of the company’s TV models. However, it has some limitations as all the Xiaomi users will not benefit since the feature hasn’t been rolled out in all the world countries. The MIUI 11 feature associated with the earthquake warning is currently operating only in 25 provinces of China. Therefore, the Xiaomi users in the world are not yet getting the option to enable this feature yet.

Xiaomi is also working closely with the Disaster Mitigation Research Institute to improve this feature. The report states that the Chinese company wants to benefit more people by joining the National Early Warning Release Centre, National Emergency Broadcasting, and China Earthquake Networks. After the success of the initial testing, the company can roll out this feature in other parts of the world in the coming future.

Once the better version undergoes a successful transition, then it can benefit a wider public. As earthquakes are sudden and devastating, nobody can transgress through them if it hits the higher figures in the Richer Scale. However, this new and effective feature rolled out by the tech giant Xiaomi will act as a significant relief as it will give people a few more seconds to move to a safer place during a massive earthquake.
